ISKCON – a spiritual organisation with a heart

Start listening

When people hear the word “organisation,” it often conjures images of bureaucracy, rigid hierarchies, and endless meetings. But ISKCON—the International Society for Krishna Consciousness—is a refreshing exception. Established by Srila Prabhupada in 1966 as a charitable, spiritual organisation, ISKCON stands out as a movement designed to uplift, inspire, and unite people in their spiritual journey. Whether you’re curious about chanting “Hare Krishna” or simply exploring a more meaningful way of life, ISKCON offers something for everyone.

The Foundation of ISKCON: Seven Purposes with a Purpose

Srila Prabhupada founded ISKCON in New York City to fulfil the teachings of the Hare Krishna movement, basing it on seven guiding purposes:

  1. To systematically propagate spiritual knowledge to society and educate all people in spiritual techniques to achieve real unity and peace.
  2. To propagate a consciousness of Krishna as described in the great scriptures like the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam.
  3. To bring members closer together for the purpose of teaching and encouraging a simpler, more natural way of life.
  4. To teach and encourage the Sankirtan movement, the congregational chanting of the holy names of God.
  5. To erect temples and sacred spaces for spiritual learning, worship, and culture.
  6. To bring society closer to Krishna consciousness, thus establishing a state of God-consciousness.
  7. To publish and distribute books, magazines, and other literature to enlighten humanity.

These purposes form the heart of ISKCON’s activities, which range from vibrant temple worship and kirtan (devotional singing) to educational courses and humanitarian projects like food distribution.

Leadership and Organisation: Loosely Organised, Deeply Spiritual

ISKCON is overseen by the Governing Body Commission (GBC), which was established by Prabhupada to ensure the society remains spiritually focused. While it’s true that many organisations can feel overly structured, ISKCON takes pride in its flexibility. In fact, some might joke that it’s “seldom organised,” making it a space where anyone can find a place without feeling bound by red tape.

What sets ISKCON apart is its essence. This isn’t an organisation run by profit margins or membership drives. Instead, it’s fuelled by a desire to spread love, devotion, and spiritual wisdom. It’s not about converting people or raising money; it’s about inspiring others to discover the joy of a Krishna-conscious life.

ISKCON’s mission is rooted in spirituality, not materialism. It’s an organisation that functions more like a family—a global network of people striving to live with love, devotion, and a connection to the divine. You don’t have to give up your current life or beliefs to participate; ISKCON simply invites you to explore spiritual practices that can enrich your life.

Becoming a Member

In ISKCON, there’s no formal membership process. There’s no paperwork to fill out or fees to pay. You become part of ISKCON simply by participating—chanting the Hare Krishna mantra, attending programs, or embracing the teachings of the Bhagavad-gita. How much of a member you become depends entirely on you and your spiritual journey.

Some people visit temples occasionally, others chant daily, and some dedicate their lives to sharing Krishna’s teachings. ISKCON welcomes all levels of commitment with open arms. Whether you’re a curious beginner or a lifelong devotee, there’s a place for you here.

ISKCON: A Spiritual Organisation with Human Imperfections

Every organisation, no matter how noble its purpose, faces challenges, and ISKCON (the International Society for Krishna Consciousness) is no exception. While it is undeniably rooted in divine teachings and spiritual truths, the reality of managing a global organisation with millions of followers means that issues can—and do—arise.

The Nature of Human Involvement

At its heart, ISKCON is dedicated to spreading Krishna consciousness and inspiring people to lead lives of devotion, compassion, and service. But as with any group that involves human beings, imperfections naturally follow. Leadership challenges, interpersonal conflicts, and occasional missteps are unavoidable when managing a society of this size and diversity.

These challenges don’t diminish the spiritual foundation of ISKCON, but they remind us that even spiritual organisations operate within the material world, where human limitations exist.

Learning from the Past

ISKCON has experienced its share of difficulties over the years. From leadership struggles to controversies, these moments serve as reminders that no organisation is perfect. However, what sets ISKCON apart is its ability to reflect, reform, and grow. Systems like the Governing Body Commission (GBC) were established to create checks and balances, ensuring the society remains aligned with Srila Prabhupada’s vision.

Mistakes, while painful, have led to valuable lessons. ISKCON’s leaders and members continually strive to improve, creating laws and principles to ensure that the organisation is a safe and uplifting space for all participants.

Staying Focused on the Spiritual Goal

Despite occasional organisational challenges, ISKCON’s essence remains spiritual. Its purpose is not to run a perfect institution but to provide a platform for people to connect with Krishna and experience the joy of spiritual life. By focusing on chanting, devotional service, and studying scripture, individuals can rise above any organisational flaws and find real inspiration.

A Safe Space for Spiritual Growth

One of ISKCON’s priorities is to create an environment where members can focus on their spiritual practices without being bogged down by organisational issues. The society strives to make temples, events, and communities places of refuge—where people can connect with like-minded individuals and Krishna’s teachings.

It’s important to remember that ISKCON is not a material organisation; it is a spiritual one. Its foundation lies in the eternal truths of the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam. As long as these principles remain at the core, ISKCON will continue to be a force for good, despite occasional setbacks.

Embracing the Journey

If you’re exploring ISKCON or already part of it, know that the imperfections of the organisation don’t diminish its spiritual purpose. Just as individuals grow and evolve on their spiritual journey, so does ISKCON as a collective. The key is to remain focused on the teachings and principles that transcend any temporary issues.

By participating in the chanting of the holy names, embracing the teachings of Srila Prabhupada, and striving for self-purification, each member contributes to the spiritual strength of the movement. Together, the society can continue to spread the light of Krishna consciousness while addressing challenges with humility and determination.

ISKCON may not be perfect, but its goal is divine—and that makes it a worthy organisation to be part of.
